There are some absolutely spectacular beaches and islands all around Llanunwas, and what makes a holiday visit to this part of the world so special. Don't miss trying some of these -- and just ask if you need any more info about howing to get there.

Looking straight out ahead is Skomer Island with Skokholm Island behind it. If you look at night you will see the red flashing light of Skokholm’s lighthouse, it is red because of the nocturnal birds that inhabit the island (the red light doesn’t startle them as much as white light), these nocturnal birds are mainly Manx shearwaters and half of the worlds population breed on Skomer and Skokholm in small burrows underground. The other rather fabulous creature you will find on both these islands, is the puffin, or rather thousands of them if you go at the right time of the year: spring early summer (until the end of July), and at this time of year (around the middle to end of May) the islands are covered in bluebells. The reason you only see puffins on Skomer and Skokholm and not Ramsey Island is that no predators such as cats and rats have managed to cross the strong currents that separate the island from the mainland.

If you are still looking out of the windows at about 45 degrees to your right you may just about be able to make out the thin tall pillar of The Smalls lighthouse, and all the way to your right is Ramsey island which consists of all those humps that rise from the sea. There is a fairly tall mountain on Ramsey which from here looks as if it is part of the mainland. There are fabulous views from the top there and the island is particularly magical when covered in flowering heather and thrift (beginning of the summer). There is a particular cliff where you get spectacular views of fulmar’s flying round and round above the turquoise sea.

Moving your gaze over to the right you will see a large rock on the horizon this is Grassholm, as I like to say: where the gannets live. It is placed 15 miles out at sea and on a sunny day you can see it is mostly white or pinkish, this is because it is inhabited during the breeding season by 30.000 pairs of Gannets (and the mess they make). Grassholm is well worth visiting if you can afford it, you will never see so many of these beautiful stylish linear birds in one place, above you as well as ahead of you. You cannot disembark onto this island however there is plenty to look at. I suggest a sunny day to visit it for maximum impact because of the bright colours that reflect off the birds, and the blues in the sea. There are also a number of curious seals there as well.
